Happy March! It’s hard to believe that the year is flying by as fast as it is. But not to worry, we’ve still got plenty of tremendous tennis yet to be played!

As tennis fans, we absolutely love March because although there aren’t any Grand Slams being played, two of the other biggest tournaments occur. These are Indian Wells and the Miami Open also known as the Sunshine double. These events are Masters 1000 Tournaments which means players have a great chance to not only win a lot of money but also earn plenty of points which help in their overall ranking. So, the farther you progress in a tournament, the more points you get. But there’s a catch. If last year’s winner, Carlos Alcaraz, doesn’t win again, he’ll lose points! In his case, he’s defending all the points he won last year but a player who didn’t do so great last year could make the finals and win a ton of points! There’s a lot more on the line than most people think and especially in Alcaraz’s case, he’s on the hunt for that world number 1 spot.

With the women, it’s been a slightly one-sided affair as Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff have been nothing short of dominant. There’s undoubtedly plenty of women who can play spoiler as the top 20 is full of spectacular athletes. Elena Rybakina is the 4th ranked player in the world and last year’s Indian Wells Champion. She could cause some upsets in these matches. Despite that, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff are the top 3 in the world for a reason. They’ve shown constant poise and both mental and physical toughness when it’s needed most along with each having their own unique play style and strengths.

Within the men’s draw, it’s been beyond exciting to watch as the competition has certainly risen. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic looks to keep making a statement even at age 36 but young guns like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner plan to put a stop to his rule. A player to look out for is Alex De Minaur as his consistent shot-making and lighting-fast speed has caught the attention of tennis fans. Coming off a tournament win in Acapulco, De Minaur or “The Demon ” as he’s nicknamed, shouldn’t let up on the gas and could certainly make a huge impact on either upcoming tournament.

Geometry

Tennis is bound and played with rectangles, triangles, and arcs. And of course, a sphere.
We send the sphere away in an arc, with spin and gravity.
We routinely send the sphere from corner to corner making triangles in the rectangle.
How large are the rectangles?
  • The Red court rectangle is almost 650 square feet.
  • The Orange court rectangle, for singles, is just over 1250 square feet.
    • You can see that this is nearly twice the size of a Red court.
  • The Green and Yellow court rectangle, for singles, is just over 2800 square feet.
    • You can see that this is nearly twice the size of an Orange court.
As the courts get bigger the balls also travel faster, further, and bounce higher.
So the player’s movement needs go up significantly as we progress from Red to Orange to Green to Yellow.
It is good to understand a little geometry.
