News:

Expand the News...
If professional tennis has an off-season it is December, and things are already cooking by the first of January. Then…

Just like that, January is behind us! It may have been quick but it certainly wasn’t one to forget. Big names, big matches, and a seriously big tournament kept all of us on edge to the very last minute. Let’s recap January and look ahead to what February might hold!

In the mind of the top tennis players, the first month of each year is centered around the famed Australian Open. Leading up to the Open are a few ATP250 tournaments such as in Adelaide and Auckland, and the WTA has a half-dozen tournaments around Australia including the United Cup which began on December 29th. These warm-up tournaments are always such fun matches to watch as it’s the first taste of New Year tennis as spectators and fans get to see how their favorite players are playing for the coming weeks. Once the ATP and WTA warm-up events conclude, it’s officially time for Melbourne, also known as the Australian Open.

Both the men and women compete in the first Grand Slam of the year spanning 14 days.

On the women’s side, most ladies in the top 10 and even top 20 have what it takes to win a Grand Slam. But in Australia, 2 names were constant. Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka.
Gauff had won the US Open at the end of 2023 and was showing no signs of slowing down. But Sabalenka had won the Australian Open in 2023 and knew not only how to handle the courts better, but the pressure as well. Both cruised through the draw and found themselves in the semifinals against one another. A US Open finals rematch which was undoubtedly going to be one to watch. With Sabalenka’s big serve and bigger forehand, she was impressive, beating Gauff 7-6,6-4 and advancing to the final as a huge favorite to win.
And, she did just that. She defeated first time major finalist Zheng 6-3,6-2 and once again hoisted the beautiful Australian Open trophy. Both her and Gauff will likely trade blows throughout the year so it should be a phenomenal storyline to watch out for.

On the men’s side, the heavy favorite was Novak Djokovic as he’s already accomplished an unimaginable feat winning 24 Grand Slams and 10 of them being in Australia. Other than him, the young guns of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Andrey Rublev were on the hunt to steal the title.
After nearly two weeks of matches, the semifinal was set to be Jannik Sinner vs. Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev vs. Sascha Zverev. With Djokovic slightly off his game and Sinner producing the highest level possible, he ousted the world number 1 6-1,6-2,6-7,6-3 handing Djokovic his first loss at the Australian open in 2,195 days.
On the other side we saw Medvedev mount an unbelievable comeback after being down 2 sets! He came back to beat Zverev 5-7,3-6,7-6,7-6,6-3 in an instant classic.
The final was set and both men were searching for their very first Australian open title and for Sinner, his first major title.
Sinner came out shaky and likely nervous, dropping the first 2 sets but found a way to fight, winning the next 3 sets and hoisting the trophy. He defeated Medvedev 3-6,3-6,6-4,6-4,6-3 in one of the most exciting finals in recent memory.

February has tons of tennis to watch as tournaments are held here in the US, France, Argentina and more! All the action is on Tennis Channel and ESPN Plus! Also, since we cant miss any tennis action, be sure to check out the Netflix docuseries called “Break Point” as a handful of players are followed during tournaments and everyday life. The second season was just released and it’s a must watch!

Recovery

After we’ve been pulled wide, or short, we need to recover our position for our opponents next shot.
After we workout we need to recover to be ready to play the next day.
3 of the key things for everyone’s recovery are:
  1. Sleep – sleep is where our body repairs itself.  You want good sleep.
  2. Hydration – as humans we are over 50% water, and good hydration helps our whole body operate.
  3. Nutrition – to fuel our body in recovery we still need complex carbohydrates, and protein for our muscle tissues.
