News:
If you’re a tennis fan, spoiled is the word that comes to mind with all the action we get this summer!
Not only did we just get the French Open and Wimbledon, but now the Olympics to follow! What a time to be a tennis fan.
This year’s Wimbledon had a ton to live up to with the masterclass that was the French Open. And, as usual, it did not disappoint. The tournament saw the most amount of 5 set matches in the Open Era as each match seemingly spanned four to five hours. We were blessed with a tournament for the ages.
The women’s draw was filled with excitement. It is usually one-way traffic with Iga Swiatek dominating, but instead, it was upset galore! Swiatek was upset in the 3rd round to small, but strong, Yulia Putinseva and with her out of the draw, it opened the draw for a variety of other players. Jasmine Paolini was one of them. She hadn’t won a match on grass in her entire career but, just like the French Open, she found herself battling for the title.
Paolini has become one of the most exciting and likable athletes on the women’s tour as she is feisty and fights tooth and nail for every ball. Her road to the final was far from easy, taking out top-ranked Americans Madison Keys and Emma Navarro along with former US Champion Bianca Andreescu. Her toughest test came in the semifinals conquering red-hot Donna Vekic in the longest women’s semifinal match in history 2-6,6-4,7-6. She met Barbora Krejcikova in the final and again, played one of the longest matches in women’s Wimbledon history. Paolini fell to Krejcikova 6-2,2-6,6-4 but has gained the love and support of countless fans throughout the world.
As for Krejkicova, formerly number 2 in the world, she had been struggling throughout 2024 with only 7 total wins coming into Wimbledon. Fast forward two weeks, and she’s the new Wimbledon champion! The women’s tour is such an enjoyable watch as they have so many players that could win on any given day. Sure, Swiatek and Coco Gauff shine, but the top women all have the capability to win.
Looking over at the men’s draw, we had a few storylines to keep an eye on. First, Novak Djokovic was competing to win his 25th Grand Slam title, which would be a record, passing the illustrious Margaret Court. The issue was that he had surgery on his knee only a few weeks before the tournament and was questioning whether he could compete. To nobody’s surprise, Djokovic soared into the finals looking pretty solid and keeping his level high. He was able to make his run beating a few qualifiers and lower-ranked opponents, until the semis where he faced Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Musetti was red hot, torching opponents with his one-handed backhand and heavy-hitting baseline game. But even he was dismantled by Djokovic.
The second big storyline was that Carlos Alcaraz had not only just won the French Open a month earlier, but was also trying to defend his Wimbledon title from a year earlier. And who did he play in the final last year? None other than Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz had a much tougher run to the final but with every player he beat, his game got better. He topped Frances Tiafoe in a 5-set thriller and later beat fellow American Tommy Paul in 4 sets. Fast forward two days and he ran through Daniil Medvedev as he did last year. With only Djokovic waiting in the final, it was sure to be a historic final. Although it was, Alcaraz simply made Djokovic look silly. He forced Novak’s hand early and did not let off the gas. After only a few hours, Alcaraz hoisted the big, golden trophy just like he did the year before, denying Djokovic of his 25th title and capturing his 4th Grand Slam. With the win, Alcaraz joins only Roger Federer as the 2nd man to ever win his first 4 Grand Slam finals. A 4 and 0 Grand Slam tournament record isn’t too shabby.
The next few months are going to be action-packed with the Olympics taking place at the end of July, followed up by the US Open in September! Keep your eyes on the ball as you won’t want to miss a beat!

“The best in the world are not the best because they win every point. It’s because they know they’ll lose again and again and have learned how to deal with it”
